SAAP Statement on COVID-19 and 2020 Conference Travel

March 1st, 2020

Dear SAAP 2020 Participants,

As we look forward with excitement to this week’s conference in San Miguel de Allende, we want to assure you that we are still keeping a close watch on the news developments regarding COVID-19. As of March 1st, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention has not issued any travel advisories related to travel in or through North America. However, we do encourage you to visit the CDC’s COVID-19 travel FAQ site (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/faqs.html), which includes helpful tips about staying healthy while traveling and which is updated regularly with new advisories.

We do understand that scheduled participants may not be able to follow through on their plans to attend (either because they are traveling from or through an affected country, or for personal health reasons). We encourage all participants to use their best judgment, perhaps in consultation with the CDC’s and/or your home institution’s travel guidelines. While we hope that no one’s plans are adversely affected, should you need to withdraw, SAAP will refund your conference registration fee.

Please do let us know of any changes to your plans regarding the conference as soon as possible (saapmx2020@gmail.com). Unfortunately, we are not able to offer video conferencing as an alternative to attending, so please also inform your session chair (or email the program chairs) about your preference regarding your presentation (e.g., having someone else read it on your behalf). We look forward to seeing you in San Miguel de Allende!

Sincerely,

Gregory Pappas, SAAP President and SAAP 2020 Local Host, on behalf of the SAAP Executive Board
