Jane Addams, “Pragmatic” Compromise, and Anti-War Pragmatism

Despite common belief, pragmatism is not incompatible with anti-war idealism. The best example of this is Jane Addams. Addams’ opposition to World War I, taken in the face of widespread criticism, shows how pragmatism can be both active and idealistic, both empirical and uncompromising. Although Addams is generally regarded as a pacifist, it is more appropriate to refer to her as an anti-war pragmatist.
