Theorizing Black Males: Engaging Tommy J. Curry's The Man-Not

Since the dawn of ethnology, Black males have been theorized as the horror of America. Social order, democracy, even civilization itself was thought to be imperiled by his presence. This panel aims to discuss the construction of Black males in 19th century ethnology as the rapist and 20th century social science as the super-predator in Tommy J. Curry's new book, The Man-Not. Curry asserts that gender theories have overlooked the historical vulnerability of Black males in America and have in fact codified Black masculinity as a pathology very similar the racist social sciences of the mid-20th century that now serve as the justification for the murder and incarceration of Black men and boys.
