Pragmatism and Resilience as a Systems Concept, with an Application to the American West

ABSTRACT: The neglected pragmatist C. West Churchman developed his “systems approach” by building on key tenets of pragmatist philosophy that had been established prior to World War II. Churchman’s approach anticipated weaknesses in the mainstream conception of sustainability that has risen to ascendancy over the last two decades. We illustrate Churchman-style systems thinking through an illustrative application that discusses containment of invasive species in the American West.
